Many people who fall into the young antisocial alcoholic subtype suffer from other mental health disorders as well, such as bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, or depression. As many as three-fourths of this subset also smoke marijuana and/or cigarettes, and many also struggle with opioid or cocaine addictions as well. Polydrug abuse, and co-occurring disorders combined with alcohol abuse, increases the risk for addiction and can interfere with treatment measures. Around one-third of young antisocial alcoholics will seek treatment for problematic drinking. More than half of young antisocial alcoholics have a family history of alcoholism, and around half also struggle with antisocial personality disorder.

Intermediate familial alcoholics are similar to functional ones but are more likely born with a genetic predisposition to alcoholism. A study by scientists at the NIAAA, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), analyzed 1,484 survey respondents who met specific diagnostic criteria for alcohol addiction. The study included people both in treatment and not seeking treatment. The presence of any two symptoms within a one-year period can result in a diagnosis of alcohol addiction.

Young antisocial alcoholics drank an average of 201 days in the last year, binge drinking (consuming five or more drinks) on an average of 80% of their drinking days. When they drink, their maximum number of drinks is 17, the highest of any subtype of alcoholic. Alcohol rehab includes treatment programs that cover a variety of approaches to managing alcohol use disorder and overcoming addiction. Different treatment options cater to different people based on your unique needs, such as how long you’ve been struggling with your alcohol addiction and how severely it’s affecting your life. These two alcoholism subtypes, however, represent only the prototypes or extremes of a continuous spectrum of manifestations of alcoholism. Many of the subtype characteristics (e.g., personality traits) are inherited independently of each other, and all possible combinations of personality traits occur (Cloninger 1987b, Svrakic et al. 1993).

Theories suggest that for certain people drinking has a different and stronger impact that can lead to alcohol use disorder. Researchers found that about 62% of functional alcoholics work full-time, 3.6% are in school full-time, and 5% are retired. Nearly 26% have a college degree or higher, and the average household income is almost $60,000, the highest among any of the subtypes. Not all alcoholics know they suffer from a substance abuse problem because denial is a regular and expected aspect of alcoholism. As exceptions, functional and young antisocial alcoholics are more likely to be aware of their drinking problem. The largest percentage of alcoholics fall into this group, as NIAAA publishes that 31.5 percent of all alcoholics in the United States fit this subtype.

Examples of these medications include Naltrexone (Vivitrol), Acamprosate (Campral), and Disulfiram (Antabuse). Support groups provide social support, encouragement, and accountability which can be beneficial during recovery.
